If you are not a resident of Minnesota and you’re operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), off-highway motorcycle (OHM) or off-road vehicle (ORV) on state or grant-in-aid trails, you’ll need a non-resident trail pass. See Trail Pass Info.

Red Top ATV Trail – is laid out in a series of challenging loops that have been developed a reputation for abundant technical backwoods riding and plenty of rocky terrain. Enthusiasts can loop around in this system all day and feel like they’re miles away from civilization, yet it’s a quick ride east to McGrath or west to Isle on the Soo Line South Trail to re-enter populated area.

Parking/Trailhead Locations: From Isle the trailhead is 4.6 miles to the east off the Soo Line South Trail.
Season: May 15 to November 1
Vehicles Allowed: ATV (Class 1 and/or Class 2) / OHM Shared

Mille Lacs Lake Casino Mn Lights

Soo Line South Trail – passes through five Minnesota counties and travels through farmlands, wetlands and woodlands as it follows the former railroad grade. Skirting the southern edge of Mille Lacs Lake, it makes its way eastward from close to Genola nearly to Superior, Wisconsin. Riders can also access the Red Top Trail between Isle and McGrath as well as the Soo Pits Trail near Moose Lake. The Soo Line South ATV Trail also connects with the 148 mile Soo Line North ATV Trail, southwest of Moose Lake.

Parking/Trailhead Location(s): Aitkin, Carlton and Pine Counties: Parking is available in the City of McGrath. Mille Lacs and Morrison County: Parking is on the east side of Highway 25 in Genola. Carlton County: Parking is available at the Soo Line Depot in Moose Lake. Parking is available in McGrath, Isle, Genola and Moose Lake.
Season: Mille Lacs, Aitkin and Pine Counties – open April 1 to November 30; Carlton County – open year round; Morrison County – April 1 to October 31; Moose Lake to Superior, WI – open year round.
Vehicles Allowed: Class I and II.

Snowmobile Safety Training
Anyone born after December 31, 1976 is required by law to hold snowmobile certification to ride in Minnesota. Visit the DNR website for more snowmobile safety training information.

RTTC – Red Top Trail Coalition was formed the summer on 2007 with the intent to include other clubs other than GIA (Grant-In-Aid) holders to perform maintenance and improvements on the Red Top Loop. Maintenance is performed in cooperation with Aitkin County Land Department and DNR Trails and Waterways. The following clubs have worked the trails to provide a safe and enjoyable riding opportunity!

MIKE HALPIN MEMORIAL TRAIL – Trail 7 has been dedicated to the memory of Mike. He very much enjoyed grooming this trail. Mike devoted a great deal of his time and energy to snowmobile and ATV trails in Mille Lacs and Aitkin Counties.
